What is Terrazzo? A Brief History of Terrazzo

Although the origin of primitive Terrazzo dates back to ancient times, the modern Terrazzo used today emerged as a result of the idea of Italian marble masters in Venice in the 16th century to transform excess marble pieces into an affordable floor covering method for terrace floors. Terrazzo means “terrace” in Italian. Terrazzo, which has become widespread with its ease of use and application, has become an indispensable floor product.

Terrazzo is known as one of the most environmentally friendly floor application methods in history, due to the use of waste materials in its production. After the waste marble particles are reduced to the appropriate size, they are brought together with a cement-based binder mixture. In addition to natural stones such as marble, basalt, granite, travertine and quartz, mirror, colored glass and mussel shells are also used in Classic Terrazzo tiles. Classic Terrazzo is applied to the entire floor at once by pouring in place. Although a method similar to the classical Terrazzo technique is applied today, Terrazzo is offered in tile form for ease of application.

Other than its impressive and authentic appearance, it has become a significant material in environments with high microbial density that requires hygiene with its antibacterial properties. For this reason, Terrazzo is frequently used in commercial projects such as hospitals.
